The 1780 Church of St. Martin the Bishop in Mochowo: Architectural History and the Transformation of Its Furnishings

Abstract

This study focuses on the architectural history of the wooden parish church in Mochowo (Sierpc County). Based on an analysis of archival sources and preserved historical material, the study revises the commonly accepted dating of the existing church (previously believed to date back to 1684). Particular attention is paid to the structural evolution of the 1780 church building, including the addition of a notable Classicist screen facade in 1876, as well as the architectural consequences of invasive twentieth-century renovations. The study also discusses the history of the predecessors of the current church and traces in detail the changes in their decor and furnishings over the past four centuries.
