Biomethane and Natural Gas-Hydrogen Blends as Tools for Decarbonising District Heating Systems: The Case of the Ciechanów CHP Plant

Abstract

The evolution of European climate policy, including the European Green Deal, the ‘Fit for 55’ package and the RE PowerEU strategy, is accelerating the decarbonisation of district heating systems and the development of an economy based on low-emission fuels. In the case of local district heating systems, however, it becomes crucial not only to assess the technical feasibility of introducing new fuels, but also to evaluate their infrastructural, economic and regulatory viability at the level of a specific company. The article presents a conceptual analysis of the technical, regulatory and economic conditions associated with the use of natural gas-hydrogen
blends and biomethane in the decarbonisation of a district heating system, using the Ciechanów CHP plant as an example. The starting point is the local context of heat source transformation, the development of gas and biomass cogeneration, and the growing importance of renewable and low-emission gases in EU energy policy.
