Selected indicators of depression and anxiety experience in cancer survivors

Abstract

The aim of the study is to identify the most pronounced indicators of depression and anxiety in patients with delayed oncology and to link their negative emotional experiences with selected socio-demographic and clinical indicators. The research team consisted of 168 participants aged 22-83 (M = 56.01; SD = 11.97). Methods: Patient Health Questionnaire PHQ-9; Generalized anxiety disorder GAD-7. Results: Increased levels of depressive symptoms were found in 27.4% of untreated patients, with the most pronounced indicators of depressive survival being fatigue, lack of energy, and sleep disorders. About 16% of the participants showed an anxious symptomatology, which was most often manifested by diffi culty in relaxing, excessive worrying, and an inability to control worries. The degree of depression and anxiety did not signifi cantly differentiate participants' age and gender, length of time since treatment end, recurrence rate, family history of cancer, and use of supportive services and patient organizations. Higher levels of depression
and anxiety were found in participants who reported having late consequences of treatment.
