National Center for Documentation of Regional Cultural Societies (1983–2002): Legacy and Achievements

Aleksander Kociszewski

Abstract

A special phenomenon of Polish regionalism is the mass movement
of socio-cultural and academic societies operating in the local and regional
space. It is a movement with a long historical tradition and achievements noticeable
and valued in “small homelands.” This form of social activity, and its
achievements and issues, deserves to be documented and analyzed. This
function was fulfi lled by the National Center for the Documentation of Regional
Cultural Societies, being a kind of archive of Polish regionalism, a research
and educational institution, operating in accordance with the needs
and expectations of the societies. This study was presented in the form of
a paper at a conference devoted to the role of institutions and academic and
cultural associations and societies in researching and documenting the heritage
of small homelands on the example of northern Mazovia, organized in
November 2023 by the National Academy of Applied Sciences named after
Ignacy Mościcki in Ciechanów.
