Government Town of Bodzanów (1808–1869): Selected Problems of Social and Economic Life

Abstract

This article is an attempt to outline the social and economic life of Bodzanów – the smallest town in Northern Mazovia during the times of the Duchy of Warsaw and the Kingdom of Poland (1808-1868). It presents the ethnic, religious, and professional structure of the inhabitants of Bodzanów, their main sources of income (agriculture, crafts, trade), and the importance of the Jewish population in the economic life of the town. The author devotes a lot of space to the financial management of municipal authorities, the income and expenses of the municipal treasury, border disputes with the owners of landed estates adjacent to the territory of Bodzanów. Through the prism of the functioning of the municipal authorities of Bodzanów he sees the causes of the economic stagnation of Mazovian towns, which at the end of the 1860s led to the publication of an ordinance by Tsar Alexander II to convert most of the cities of the Kingdom of Poland into settlements.
